My daughter bought this with her own money for her sixth birthday. She was very excited about having a game like daddy's. By the second turn of her first play she had it figured out, except maybe trading with the bank compared to the board and by the end of game two she was suggesting optimal trades. Within a month she had come up with successful strategies that made her a quality opponent. Now, nine months later, it has maintained it's place in her collection. She has taught it to her friends and had successful games without parental supervision.
So what does that mean to your five year old? My daughter had just turned six when she got this game and had no problems catching on to the mechanics. The fact that this game can be taught by kids to kids shows me that this game was well designed.
It's interesting that even though it's a kids game, my wife and I enjoy playing it with my daughter immensely. In fact, I feel like my four year old should be ready for a game, with some help, very soon. Hope that helps.
