Great review! I particularly appreciate your taking the perspective how is this as a children's game played with children. There are far too few thorough game reviews like this one focusing on kids games. I have 2 grandsons between the target ages for this game (currently 3 & 10), but this is very helpful in gauging when this might be appropriate.

I hope your solution to the Coco tiles works, I followed some of the discussion on the forum about this and was concerned if that would spoil the game.

Thanks again.

Thank you.

This is a great game to play with the young ones. The greatest compliment I can pay the game is that it can be enjoyed by such a large age range due to its quicker play time and bartering added with the advanced rules.

Enjoy the game!

Yes, check out p. 3 of the rules under "Roll the Dice": "For each of his pirates’ lairs adjacent to an island with the number rolled,
that player receives 1 resource tile that matches the icon of that
adjacent island." (Emphasis added.)

Thanks to both respondents!

I've got 2 girls - 5 and 9, and they both love the game. Neither one of them requires prompting, although the 5 year old can get focused on the Coco tiles (wants them, not to win, but just wants them).

One of the things we've noticed is that it tends to be "The first player is the one who wins the game". We've only played it about 12 times, and all but 1 the first player won... anyone else seeing that? Or is it just us? Maybe need to play more to confirm, make sure that as adults we're not "throwing the game" that much.

Storage solution that makes set up and tear down painless. Tossed the poor insert.

Storage solution in box. Set up takes 1 minute as opposed to the chore of picking through each piece if used with original insert.

i am thinking about buying this so my daughters can play together, but was wondering how it plays strictly from a 2P perspective.

2P works very well. It's a great game for kids, or for playing with kids. My 5 y.o. loves it, and requires no help from me (after just a few plays).

My 5-year-old loves this game, and so do I. Components are great, and it is neat to have that Catan feel with a game meant for kids.

The Coco tiles are the ONLY problem with the game, as chaining them becomes a real downer for the other players. I'll try to convince my 5-year-old to play the "1 tile per turn" rule, and we'll see if it fixes things.

So far that 1 little fix has worked great for my family, let us know if it works for you also.

I've only played 2P with my son, and have really enjoyed it. There is a 2 player board, so you don't have to worry about being so spread out that there's no interaction.

We just got this for Christmas. I played a game with all three kids. Then the oldest wanted a one on one game with me, then she had one with her brother, then he had one with me. Seems to be a hit.

We didn't have the first player winning problem. I may add the one-Coco-tile-per-turn rule.

Glad your family is enjoying it!

I have not encountered the first player problem and the one coco tile rule has seemed to fix the only small issue my fmaily had with the game.

Someone on BGG suggested a house rule "can only buy 1 Polly card per turn" and that seems to fix the problem just fine.
